Class Description:

Unlock the fascinating world of collecting history in this two-hour exploration of some of the most cherished items from the past: antique books, historical artifacts, natural history specimens, and fine art. Whether you are a budding collector or a history enthusiast looking to deepen your understanding, this class will introduce you to the rich world of collecting.

We’ll begin by discussing the allure of collecting as a way to connect with the past, exploring the stories that these objects tell, and how they shape our understanding of history. You'll gain insights into the history and value of antique books, from first editions to vintage reproductions. We’ll also delve into the world of historical artifacts, offering practical tips on identifying, sourcing, and caring for items of cultural and historical significance. You’ll explore natural history collections—fossils, minerals, and specimens—and learn how to identify their value, as well as the ethical considerations. Finally, the world of art and antiques will be explored, with a focus on understanding provenance, market value, and collecting for both passion and investment.

 

Throughout this fun “crash-course”, we will cover:

  • Antique Books: Learn how to identify rare editions, first prints, and vintage reproductions that are not only treasures for their historical value but also integral parts of cultural history.
  • Historical Artifacts: Explore the art of collecting artifacts from different periods, ranging from ancient tools and relics to modern pieces with historical significance. Discover how to assess their authenticity and value, and how to preserve and display them.
  • Antique Décor: Understand the role of vintage furniture, textiles, and décor in interior design. Learn how to curate a collection that adds character to your living space, with a focus on items from the last 200 years.
  • Natural History Collections: Dive into the world of fossils, minerals, and botanical specimens. Understand what makes these objects unique and how they contribute to our understanding of natural history.
  • Art: Gain insight into collecting art, from historical paintings to sculptures, and learn the essentials of provenance, valuation, and how to curate a collection that blends historical significance with personal taste.

  • What you should know: 

    About your teaching instructor: Your instructor for this class is Shasta Smith. She has a 20-year history in education, including being a notable speaker at conventions and teaching as a college instructor. Her focus is history preservation, art history studies, and comparative witchcraft study. Her goal is to create an enjoyable atmosphere for all to learn and enjoy.

    We welcome beginners! This is a 2-hour class lecture & questions (15 minutes is devoted to checking in, getting acquainted, picking out a beverage and finding your seat) Your in-class syllabus includes any needed tools as it pertains to certain classes and is provided by the instructor.

    The dos and don’ts of our classes: *To respect the privacy of attendees: Please do not bring in personal altars or ritual items! Please do not take photos or videos during your visit. Please do not bring in your prejudices. Classes are a neutral and safe space for attendees. You are welcome to bring a notebook and an open mind. facility is a friendly environment that is meant to enjoy and inform. Come prepared and ready to learn, be on time, and silence your cell phones. We respect everyone’s time; therefore, classes start ON TIME. The first 15 minutes are set aside to get acquainted and find a seat. If you are late, come in quietly, check-in, and find a seat immediately. classes and lectures are structured and based on old-world practices, experiences, and knowledge. These classes are designed for personal knowledge, and not structured to be intimidating.

    Refund/exchange policy: We do not refund classes, however if you feel you cannot make the class, we can reschedule you for the same class at a later date OR exchange it for another class of the same cost.
