Black Herman (Benjamin Rucker) authored Secrets of Magic, Mystery, and Legerdemain, that contains his semi-fictionalized autobiography, directions for simple illusions suitable to the novice stage magician, advice on astrology and lucky numbers, and a sampling of African-American hoodoo folk magic customs and practices. An announcement on the book's title page, "Black Herman Comes Through Every Seven Years", referred to Herman's pattern of returning to venues on a regular basis; the book was sold at his performances

This book is in delicate condition, whoever owned this book many years ago wrote some opinionated notes in the back of the book in pencil and made various “x” marks in pencil within the book…which adds to the uniqueness. None of the markings cover or blackout anything.  The book has some page separations from the original staples. They are not torn out, but simply detached and in place.  This is a soft bound book with 126 pages. It has use and ware, see images.  All known original copies were published in 1938.
It is a marvelous piece of occult history, American legends, and was historically ghost-written which has its own intertwining publishing history.
