Lucifer is a 17th century Dutch dramatic poem by Joost van den Vondel that tells the story of Lucifer's rebellion against God and the consequences that follow:
The play explores themes of rebellion, pride, and the interaction between human nature and celestial beings. Lucifer is considered a masterpiece by Vondel and a major work in Dutch literature. The play premiered in Amsterdam in 1654 but was banned after its second performance due to pressure from the clergy. Some say the play was controversial because it showed the "depths of God" in a sacrilegious way.
The play is set in Heaven and focuses on the conflict between good and evil
Lucifer is the main character, a high-ranking angel who leads the rebellion against God. The other characters include archangel Michael, who ejects the rebels from Heaven, and the angels Apollion, Belial, and Beelzebub. Lucifer leads the rebellion because he wants to remain the first after God and because he believes that humans could become a threat to Heaven's inhabitants. After the rebellion is defeated, Lucifer seeks revenge on Earth by seducing Adam and Eve into committing original sin.
